James Colbert's raid anchors Arkansas Post within a broader colonial contest, showing that the American Revolution extended into Louisiana. Founded in 1686 by Henri de Tonti on the Arkansas River near its confluence with the Mississippi, the post served as a diplomatic and trading outpost with the Quapaw, a way station for river travelers, a military garrison, and a hub for European hunting activity.
