Judge presses DHS after teen deported despite order: 'who was responsible?'

A federal judge ordered the Department of Homeland Security to explain how a teen asylum seeker was deported to El Salvador despite a court-supervised settlement that previously returned him to the U.S. Judge Stephanie Gallagher, appointed by President Donald Trump, issued an order on Sept. 2 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland demanding answers to eight questions by noon the next day. The questions included who authorized moving “E.L.A.” from detention and who ordered him placed on a plane to San Salvador. Attorneys said he was deported Sept. 1 even though he was covered by the J.O.P. v. DHS class-action protections.
