Kayaking, caves, and yurts: An excursion on Lake Superior
xCruzo Brief
A planned kayaking trip to Bayfield, Wisconsin, was disrupted when a small-craft advisory was issued for the following day, warning of sustained high winds and/or hazardous seas. The traveler received the notice while about five miles out of International Falls, then coordinated with Apostle Island Kayaking Express to move the excursion to the next day. After adjusting the itinerary, the group found accommodations a few miles outside Bayfield: Turtle Yurts, its first stay in a yurt. The piece describes yurts as portable, low-maintenance structures typically made of wood and tarps, presented as a form of “glamping.” The lodging included an access code, a comfortable bed, hot shower water, and working heater and air conditioner.
