Kuwait holds Iraqi fishing boat with crew, document shows - Shafaq News | Latest breaking news in Iraq and the world
Kuwaiti authorities have detained an Iraqi fishing boat and its five-member crew after the fishermen lost contact near the maritime border, according to an official document reviewed by Shafaq News. The paperwork states that the Al-Nasr Cooperative Society for fishing and fish marketing notified the Al-Faw district administration about the incident involving vessel IFB166, one day after contact was lost. The case was then forwarded to the Basra governor’s office for action. The document did not provide further details about why the crew was detained or where they were located, and neither the Iraqi government nor Basra’s local authorities had issued statements at the time of reporting. Earlier, on July 6, a security source told Shafaq News that a Kuwaiti Coast Guard patrol opened fire on the boat in Iraqi territorial waters, prompting the crew from Al-Faw district in southern Basra to lose contact. A group opposing the Khor Abdullah Agreement called for summoning Kuwait’s ambassador to Baghdad and urged investigation and diplomatic and legal steps.
