The Florida spiny lobster mini season opens Wednesday and runs through Thursday, with federal, state, and local authorities increasing enforcement across South Florida. The two-day season follows the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday in July, starting and ending at midnight. Officials from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission emphasize that a recreational saltwater fishing license and a lobster permit are required to harvest. Limits are 12 lobsters per person per day, except in Monroe County and Biscayne National Park where the cap drops to six. Lobsters must have a carapace longer than 3 inches and be measured in the water, while egg-bearing lobsters cannot be taken. Night diving is prohibited in Monroe County during the season window. Authorities also highlight safety around boats and divers, including turning engines completely off near swimmers and diving activity. Penalties for undersized lobsters in Monroe County can include up to 60 days in jail or a $500 fine.
