Looking Back: Somerset Sports Awards winners celebrated in 2013 revisits the Somerset Sports Awards held in 2013, spotlighting winners and nominees from Taunton Deane. A swimmer dubbed “Somerset’s Tom Daley” was among the recognized competitors, with Charlie Attwood of Taunton Deane Swimming Club winning the young sports person of the year prize. At age 15, Attwood was ranked number one in 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke at county and regional level and had beaten Olympic silver medallist Michael Jamieson at the British Gas International Open Meet in March. Attwood said he did not expect to win but would keep training, aiming for the next Olympics and selection for the Youth Olympics in July. Barry Jones, head of PE at Castle School, won a contribution to school sport award after retiring following 33 years of service. The event, run by Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership, drew about 70 nominations and took place at Somerset County Cricket Ground.
