Major transformation work ramps up as Stansted Airport set for busiest summer

Stansted Airport is gearing up for what it says will be its busiest summer yet, with passenger numbers expected to top 6.5 million in the peak period. The airport reported that June saw a 3.4% year-on-year rise to 2.88 million passengers, its busiest June on record. The growth coincides with a wider transformation programme announced in October 2024 aimed at adding capacity on the airport’s single runway and improving the passenger experience. Works include new “skylink” walkways linking the terminal to satellite buildings and enabling the decommissioning of the people mover system. The upgrade’s centrepiece is a three-bay extension adding 16,500 square metres, making Stansted Europe’s largest single-terminal airport when complete.
