Malaysia sees 14.44% increase in horseshoe crab landings

Malaysia records a 14.44% rise in horseshoe crab landings, signaling resilient coastal ecosystems supporting this ancient species. Landings increased from 232.80 tonnes in 2023 to 266.42 tonnes in 2025, while wholesale value climbed 9.32% to RM2.68 million from RM2.45 million. Datuk Adnan Hussain, Director‑General of Fisheries, noted the species’ high value for biomedicine and vaccine safety testing due to its amebocyte lysate. He warned that habitat destruction, pollution, and egg harvesting threaten populations, despite positive trends. Conservation efforts will encompass enforcement, scientific research, juvenile release programs, and protected breeding zones, with community action urged to safeguard mangrove and coastal habitats.
