Marine vet hit with broom, assaulted at New York state veterans' home, wife alleges
A Westchester County woman alleges video shows a caretaker abusing her husband at the New York State Veterans Home at Montrose, and prosecutors have charged the attendant. Angela Sangro says the recordings depict Matthew Cox, the then-attendant, striking 60-year-old Gulf War Marine veteran Albert O’Toole, who has Alzheimer’s, including hitting him with a broom, punching him, and grabbing his neck. She reported noticing marks and says her husband was repeatedly sent for psychiatric evaluations. After she installed a hidden camera in O’Toole’s room on March 1, she said the footage appeared to corroborate her claims. The Westchester County District Attorney’s Office arrested Cox and filed a felony charge for endangering the welfare of a physically disabled person. The state Department of Health said Cox was terminated and placed on leave, while the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs continued to keep him on payroll. Cox is scheduled to return to court in July.
