Missing boater found safe in Tawas Lake, nearly six hours after he was last seen

An 83-year-old man missing on Tawas Lake in Northern Michigan was found safe Thursday night, nearly six hours after he was last seen by his family. Michigan State Police said the search began after his wife reported he went fishing around 6 p.m. in an aluminum boat and didn’t return. Troopers from the West Branch post and a conservation officer with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources searched around Oscoda Township in Iosco County starting about 9:45 p.m. He had no cell phone or emergency gear, and his boat lacked lights. With the lake’s shallow water and heavy wild rice, rescuers used a shallow-water mud boat and an MSP aviation crew.
