Navy says it can't help recover wreckage of Gloucester fishing boat Lily Jean

The U.S. Navy says it cannot assist with recovering information and remains from the Gloucester fishing vessel Lily Jean, which sank off Cape Ann in January with seven people aboard. In a letter dated July 27 and received by Gov. Maura Healey on Wednesday, acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao wrote that the Navy is unable to fulfill a request for salvage and recovery. Healey had asked months earlier for help, noting—according to the Boston Globe—that the boat had a hard drive and video recorder that the manufacturer believed might contain data if recovered. The Navy said it remains in contact with the U.S. Coast Guard, which is leading the investigation alongside the National Transportation Safety Board. Cao added the Navy received no federal requests to recover the vessel.
