Never thought in a million years I’d run into a tiger’: fisherman lands rare catch on Cape Cod centers on a surprise tiger shark caught from shore near Falmouth, Massachusetts. Nate Rouette, 23, and his older brother Nelson reeled in the shark during early-morning fishing on Thursday. They had been using eel bait expecting sand sharks, but caught a bluish-gray juvenile tiger shark about 5 feet long and weighing roughly 40 pounds. Rouette said the sighting is notable in Cape Cod waters; he cited a warming trend that is expanding the range of southern species. John Chisholm of the New England Aquarium said tiger shark sightings in Massachusetts are increasing each year, and juvenile tiger sharks have appeared near Cape Cod in the past four to five years, though catching one from the beach remains rare. Chisholm recently confirmed another report from Mashpee. Rouette and his brother took precautions to remove the hook safely and keep the shark wet while on shore.
