New Democracy MEPs question EU over Turkey report omissions in statement
New Democracy MEPs are questioning the EU over what they call omissions in messaging following a high-level Turkey meeting in Ankara. Greek lawmakers from the ruling New Democracy party submitted a written question to EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas after Thursday’s talks with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. The meeting also included EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos and Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner. In a joint statement, EU officials said Turkey’s membership progress depends on strengthening the rule of law, protecting fundamental rights and meeting democratic standards. However, the MEPs criticized the lack of references to a European Parliament report that they say condemned Turkey’s casus belli against Greece and cited alleged sovereignty violations, as well as objections linked to EU-backed projects, including a planned Aegean marine park and alleged illegal fishing. The European Commission had not replied publicly at the time of reporting.
