Montana's Clark Fork River should be on every fly-fishing list as reports from the lower Clark Fork near St. Regis are encouraging, and the Spokane River opened on May 23. Flows are high for this stage, creating prime opportunities, while evenings show a robust caddis hatch and occasional salmonflies.

Lake Coeur d'Alene's south end yields kokanee at 14–15 inches, with Apex lures effective for trolling, and rainbow action reported in 20 feet of water. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife reports 15.5 million trout and kokanee stocked in over 500 lowland lakes, extending the season.
