ICE backers join fray, support feds outside Delaney Hall
Pro-ICE supporters gathered Saturday outside Delaney Hall in Newark to back federal agents and confront anti-ICE demonstrators. About 200 pro-ICE and 300 anti-ICE protesters stood behind separate barricades, trading chants such as 'We love ICE' and 'Stop the hate.' John Raftery, 70, said ICE is protecting Americans, while Tim Walsh, a GOP candidate, joined the pro-ICE side. The demonstrations were quieter than the prior nights, but tensions remained high as police prepared for potential clashes outside Delaney Hall. The Newark Police and New Jersey State Police reinforced barricades, while ICE thanked the police partnership for restoring order. Earlier in the week, protesters clashed, with several arrests and a man who reportedly bit an ICE agent’s arm. Gov. Mikie Sherrill had proposed 'peace zones' near the facility to curb violence, a plan supported by police officials.
