The Michigan Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Division released its recreational fishing report for May 28, 2026, detailing activity across the Northwest and Northeast Lower Peninsula waterways. In Manistee, boat anglers chased chinook salmon and lake trout from 120 to 200 feet while trolling green-and-glow spoons, and pier anglers pursued chinook with alewife and spoons. Ludington reported chinook near Big Sable Point in 100 to 200 feet, with boat work at 40 to 90 feet, and Charlevoix saw limited Cisco fishing in the Pine River channel. Little Traverse Bay noted reduced steelhead as the season winds down and water remained cool.
West Grand Traverse Bay yielded a few smallmouth bass along the breakwalls in 15 to 30 feet, and Leland saw steelhead still present with boaters targeting lake trout at 100 to 150 feet. Northeast Michigan included Tawas/Au Gres with light pressure and a few smallmouths, Thunder Bay River with fair walleye and Atlantic salmon casting spinners, and Alpena anglers reporting lake trout and salmon at 45 to 70 feet using leadcore and dipsy divers in colors like watermelon, orange, and greens.
