Kerala rain: Yellow alert in 6 districts today, trawling ban from June 9
Heavy rainfall and monsoon activity dominated Kerala’s weather outlook as the IMD issued yellow alerts for six districts—Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur—with 7-11 cm expected in 24 hours on Sunday. The southwest monsoon has advanced into parts of the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, the Comorin region, and large areas of the Bay of Bengal, with further progression anticipated into Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and nearby areas over the next four to five days. Winds of 35-45 km/h, gusting to 55 km/h, risk squally conditions along the coast, and fishermen were advised to stay off the sea. Palakkad registered the state's highest temperature at 35.7°C in recent hours. Kerala also announced a 52-day trawling ban from June 9 to July 31 to protect breeding stocks, with traditional fishermen allowed to surface fish; authorities prepared free ration for affected workers and ramped up enforcement, patrols, and coastal coordination, including Navy and Coast Guard standby and 24-hour control rooms since May 15.
