Orcas have sunk a yacht off north-west Spain after ramming three other boats in the same area, highlighting ongoing risks from killer whale interactions off Galicia. Around 5pm yesterday, the pleasure craft Idem, about a mile off Estaca de Bares in A Coruña province, began taking on water after its rudder was destroyed and the vessel was sinking. Two crew members were rescued and later transferred by a Spanish Coastguard ship to the nearby town of Cariño, while a helicopter, Helimer 401, checked for signs of pollution. The incident followed the same day’s reports of three other sailboats whose rudders were targeted, with two still reaching shore and another being escorted to port. Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (CCS) Finisterre coordinated the emergencies.
