Over 800,000 boat licenses will change forever under planned system overhaul

Minnesota plans a sweeping modernization of boating and ATV licenses, digitizing more than 800,000 licenses as part of a broader push following recent electronic reforms for fishing and hunting licenses. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources notes the upgrade is the first system overhaul in 25 years and will deliver digital licenses via the new DNR app, reducing the need for physical tags while preserving paper options. The transition temporarily paused fishing license sales from June 2–8 to migrate data. Officials say the app will simplify license selection, provide detailed license requirements, and allow users to share access with family members, with Commissioner Sarah Strommen emphasizing the outdoor recreation market’s significance.
