Restrictions are intended to reduce stress on species such as prized trout. In Montana, Yellowstone River rules expanded Wednesday, including afternoon closures across the whole park; neighboring officials also widened limits to cover about 1,200 miles of rivers. Colorado imposed summer restrictions on 19 rivers totaling 635.5 miles, described as unprecedented. The dry conditions can force anglers to handle fish less, as temperature-stressed trout can die if out of water briefly.
