Police rescue five people from sinking boat near Asharoken

Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers rescued five people from a sinking 17-foot fishing boat in Long Island Sound near Asharoken on Aug. 3. The men were on board when the vessel began taking on water at 5:25 p.m., and one caller contacted 911 reporting the boat was halfway filled. Officers John Dreyer, Dave Froehlich and Jack Hardy responded in Marine Bravo. They brought their boat alongside the distressed men and pulled all five aboard unharmed. Police then pumped out the sinking vessel and towed it safely to the Soundview Boat Ramp in Northport.
