Port, state officials laud progress on $383 million investment
California transportation officials and port leaders highlighted progress on a $383 million investment tied to decarbonizing operations at the Port of Long Beach. CalSTA Secretary Toks Omishakin visited the port to see how a record-setting grant from California’s Port and Freight Infrastructure Program is being deployed, aiming to support more than 22,000 jobs and build a modern, sustainable supply chain at one of the nation’s busiest facilities. The event at SSA Terminals’ Pier C, a joint venture of SSA Marine and Matson, focused on the purchase of 15 zero-emission, human-operated yard tractors, related charging infrastructure, and a tugboat repowered with a lower-emission engine. Officials said the funding will help cut more than 12% of annual carbon dioxide and over 5% of annual nitrogen oxide from port-related operations by 2028. Port, state, and ILWU Local officials attended, as supporters framed the effort as advancing union jobs and environmental compliance.
