Renew Europe group in the European Parliament is pressing for a lasting solution to tackle online child sexual abuse material (CSAM), arguing against renewing an interim measure. On Friday 3 July, members said they should not extend for a third time the ePrivacy Directive derogation that lets digital platforms detect CSAM voluntarily, emphasizing that negotiations are close to finalizing a permanent framework. Belgian liberal Hilde Vautmans warned that reopening the temporary exception would slow talks and weaken Parliament’s position. The European Parliament is set to vote Tuesday 7 July on the Council of the EU’s proposal to extend the expired derogation until April 2028. The decision will shape how EU rules balance platform responsibilities and privacy.
