Renfrew residents to join Provost for traditional fishing ceremony

Renfrew residents will be able to join the Lord Provost of Renfrewshire in a traditional fishing-net casting ceremony for the first time in almost ten years, reinforcing local salmon fishing rights on the River Clyde. The event takes place on 28 August, with small boats departing the Braehead pier at 1pm and traveling down the Clyde. Provost Cameron will cast the nets during the ceremony, marking the first time residents can join him on the water since 2017. The day will also include a showing of a specially commissioned film on Clyde salmon fishing history by local filmmaker Paul Russell, followed by afternoon tea. King Robert III’s 1396 charter and Queen Anne’s 1703 confirmation underpin the rights, which were later restored after issues tied to areas owned by Sir Michael Stewart. Since restoration, the council says the Provost casts and hauls nets every three years.
