Rev. Al Sharpton offered a $50,000 reward for new information into the death of Nolan Xavier Wells, an 18-year-old whose case drew national attention after a July 4 boat trip with friends in Mississippi. Family and supporters gathered Monday in a church in Mississippi for a ceremony that included remarks from Wells’ parents, who described him as a gifted athlete and a welcoming presence. Sharpton, speaking during the service, said investigators should not rule out foul play before an independent investigation, and he referenced racist violence in Mississippi history. County Sheriff John Ledbetter said Wells’ friends are cooperating, and that initial interviews suggested Wells chose to stay on Horn Island, off the Gulf Coast, before his body was found two days later. Wells’ family attorney Ben Crump said there are contradictions, including claims of deleted phone messages. Tyler Perry helped pay for the funeral.
