Scott's, Oakland's unofficial boardroom, is turning 50. Meet the chefs who have been there the longest
Scott’s Seafood Grill and Bar is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and three long-tenured chefs say the restaurant has effectively operated like “family” for decades. The original Scott’s opened 50 years ago in San Francisco’s Marina District before expanding across the bridge to Jack London Square in Oakland. While the Jack London waterfront grew into a tourism hub—alongside venues and restaurants such as Square Apple, Kirby’s Elegant Farmer, and The Grotto—many nearby businesses closed over time. Scott’s endured through economic downturns, crime, and the global pandemic. The restaurant has also become a local meeting point for business leaders and families, with Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee among frequent diners. Managing partner Ramiro Carabez attributes the longevity to staff retention and nearly 100 employees committed to consistent service. Carabez, who moved from Michoacán, Mexico, joined Scott’s as a 19-year-old in the dish pit and worked his way up.
