Search for 6 missing in Strait of Georgia has been suspended
The search for six missing people after a charter boat capsized in Canada’s Strait of Georgia has been suspended, shifting the response to law enforcement. Marine Forces Pacific public relations officer Capt. Pedram Mohyeddin said a Regional Search and Rescue commander in Victoria decided to halt the operation at 9:45 p.m. Sunday. The initial mayday call reported several people in the water without personal flotation devices, about 10 nautical miles southwest of Vancouver International Airport, just before noon. Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Victoria reported four people were recovered after searches that used aircraft from 19 Wing Comox, the Canadian Coast Guard, BC Ferries, civilian vessels and the RCMP. The remaining six were the focus through the rest of the day, before the transition to the RCMP.
