Search suspended for 3 missing after boat with family spreading ashes capsizes on San Francisco Bay
U.S. Coast Guard crews suspended their search late Wednesday for three people still missing after a cabin cruiser capsized in cold, choppy waters of San Francisco Bay the day before. The Coast Guard said 16 people were rescued from the Volare, which carried 20 family members and friends as they went out to scatter the ashes of a loved one. Coast Guard Captain Jared S. Toczko said suspending the search was among the hardest parts of the job, while also noting that some missing people could still have been alive, potentially trapped below or in the main deck. Search teams covered more than 814 square miles and suspended activity “pending further developments.” San Francisco Police Commander Brien Hoo said divers or an underwater drone would be used once the wreck is located, while the depth and rough seas—swells up to 5 feet—complicate efforts.
