See You': Minister Warns Vladimir Putin After Russian Ship Fires Warning Shots Near British Yacht
See You': A government minister warns Vladimir Putin after a Russian warship fired warning shots near a British yacht in the English Channel. The frigate Admiral Grigorovich fired several warning shots after attempting to contact the 40-foot Bright Future, which was carrying Jane Kelvey, 68, and her husband Alan, 70, toward France when the incident occurred. The vessel was about 20 nautical miles south of the Isle of Wight, outside the United Kingdom's territorial waters. The Ministry of Defence said the shots were not aimed at the yacht but to avert a potential collision. Royal Navy observers, including the offshore patrol vessel HMS Mersey, tracked the Grigorovich during the encounter.
Cabinet Office minister Nick Thomas-Symonds framed the episode as further evidence of Russian aggression, affirming that London would defend the country and its people. The incident follows a recent Royal Navy interception in the Channel of a so-called 'shadow fleet' tanker, Smyrtos, carrying sanctioned Russian oil intended to fund Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. Analysts note that shadow vessels illustrate ongoing use of maritime fronts to fuel Kremlin aims, while the Royal Navy continues to shadow Russian warships approaching UK waters to deter escalation.
