Six migrants, including an infant, died after a speedboat carrying people from Turkey collided with a Greek coast guard vessel off Lesvos, Greek authorities said on Monday. The crash happened about 3.5 nautical miles south of Agrilia early in the morning, before the speedboat overturned. The coast guard recovered four men, one woman and the infant; eight survivors were taken to hospital. Authorities arrested a 37-year-old Turkish national who was among the survivors, identifying him as the suspected smuggler and boat operator. Shipping minister Vassilis Kikilias said evidence so far suggests the speedboat struck the left side of the coast guard vessel and vowed “zero tolerance” for smugglers.
