Slow Swedish summer on the tranquil islands of Östergötland

On Sweden’s east coast, the Östergötland archipelago offers a notably quieter take on Baltic island life, with roughly 9,000 islands scattered a few hours south of Stockholm. Starting from the 1895 Arkösunds hotell at about 5am, the journey is framed by calm waters, geese overhead, and cygnets sheltered under a bridge. The region spans areas including Arkösund, Sankt Anna, Gryt and Tjust, with red timber summer houses and wildlife such as seals and seabirds. Visitors move by sailboat, motorboat or kayak.
