SpaceX intends to invest up to $100 billion in massive Louisiana spaceport

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry said Tuesday that SpaceX will commit up to $100 billion to build “Starbase Louisiana” factories and launch pads in coastal parts of the state. The plan is intended to scale up the Starbase complex SpaceX has developed over the past decade in southern Texas. SpaceX COO Gwynne Shotwell said the Louisiana site would be self-sustaining, with propellant production, power generation, deep-water shipping, vehicle processing, and an on-site airport. SpaceX is aiming to start construction in 2027, targeting an initial launch by 2029. The company says it would use only a small portion of roughly 125,000 acres in the Pecan Island area, working with state and federal agencies to limit coastal erosion, where Louisiana loses 1 to 3 meters annually.
