Spain top WC Group H eliminating Uruguay
Spain advanced to the round of 32 by eliminating Uruguay in World Cup Group H, winning 1-0 on early Saturday (Finnish time) at Guadalajara Stadium. Alex Baena scored in the first half as his shot slipped through the gloves of Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera and rolled into the net just before halftime. With the win, Spain finished group play with seven points, four ahead of second-placed Cabo Verde, while Uruguay ended third with two points. The reigning European champions will face a yet-to-be-determined opponent in Los Angeles on July 2. A minute’s silence for the victims of Venezuela’s earthquake was held before kickoff. Spain controlled possession and forced Uruguay deep, with late chances including a crossbar hit by Ferran Torres and a stoppage-time sending off of Agustin Canobbio for a high challenge on Nico Williams.
