Stewards tackle fan after pitch invasion during Iran vs Egypt World Cup game
Iran’s bid to reach the World Cup Round of 32 hinged on its Group-stage finale against Egypt on June 26, but the match in Seattle turned chaotic after a pitch invasion. Iran believed it had scored a late extra-time winner to lead 2-1, triggering celebrations from the crowd, including a fan who entered the field. U.S. stewards at Lumen Field tackled the pitch invader to the ground and removed him from the stadium area. However, a VAR review overturned Iran’s second goal, leaving the game at 1-1 and Egypt effectively spared. Iran finished third in its group with three points and a zero goal difference, with four other third-place teams still able to pass Iran. If DR Congo won and Algeria and Croatia drew or earned at least a point in their final matches, Iran could drop out of the top eight.
