Student dies on uni exchange in Portugal after being swept away in a river

A 23-year-old Erasmus exchange student, Melek Ozturk, has died in Portugal after being swept away in the Cavado River in Barcelos. Ozturk was cooling off with friends when she was caught in a strong current and disappeared beneath the water. Witnesses and friends raised the alarm and diving and rescue teams searched the area for about an hour before her body was found. Portuguese emergency services said she will be returned to Turkey after official procedures are completed. She is due to be buried in Cumadere, her hometown in Kosk. The case follows the death of a British student last month in Lisbon.
