Sweeney Award for bravery presented to Marine veteran who helped stop Memorial Drive shooting

A Marine veteran who helped stop the Memorial Drive shooting in Cambridge on May 11 received the Madeline “Amy” Sweeney Award for Civilian Bravery during a ceremony in Massachusetts on Friday. The award is presented every year on 9/11 and honors Amy Sweeney, an Acton flight attendant who relayed critical information about terrorists and a hijacking to authorities while American Airlines Flight 11 was on route to the World Trade Center. This year’s recipient, U.S. Marine veteran T.J. Swenson Jr., was recognized “for his extraordinary actions to protect others,” Gov. Maura Healey said. Investigators said a Marine veteran and a Massachusetts State Police trooper opened fire on the alleged gunman, Tyler Brown, who is accused of firing up to 60 shots at passing cars and critically injuring two men.
