Tamil Nadu: Seaweed blankets Thoothukudi's eastern shores,

Seaweed has blanketed parts of Thoothukudi’s eastern coastline in Tamil Nadu after large quantities washed ashore, drawing public attention on June 29. Local fishermen said the phenomenon is typically triggered by strong winds and is a regular seasonal occurrence, noting it has been seen along the Thoothukudi coast on more than one occasion in recent months. Earlier, on June 17, red seaweed was reported near Thoothukudi Harbour Beach, attracting tourists and residents. Marine enthusiasts linked the wash-ups to natural growth in the Gulf of Mannar and to changing ocean currents and wind patterns. The Indian Meteorological Department, through its regional office, warned of surging waves that day, forecasting waves of about 1.2–1.3 meters with a 15 to 17 second period from 17:30 hours on June 28, 2026, to 14:30 hours on June 29, 2026. The IMD advised fishermen to exercise utmost vigilance and urged careful conduct during recreational activities.
