Rohingya teenager Jani Alom, 15, was abducted on his way home from school in the Bangladeshi refugee camp at Cox’s Bazar, weeks before his father Abdul Nur last heard from him in early June. Alom told his father he would be put on a boat to Malaysia, after being taken two months earlier. Nur later paid about $2,800 in ransom collected from relatives and neighbors. He now fears Alom was among more than 500 people on two boats that vanished off Myanmar in July. UN figures cited by the article say roughly one in seven who attempt the crossing die, with 820 reported dead or missing this year.
