Tim Ream Named Captain For USA's World Cup Squad

Tim Ream will captain the U.S. men's national team at this summer's World Cup, manager Mauricio Pochettino announced Saturday. The 38-year-old center back has captained 16 of 23 matches in the Pochettino era, including the Oct. 12, 2024 friendly against Panama in Austin. Pochettino called Ream a proven leader, noting his experience and ability to connect with teammates. The decision underscores the value of a veteran who has been with the national team for 15 years. Ream has 80 caps, one goal, and played every minute of the 2022 World Cup. He debuted on Nov. 17, 2010. The U.S. will meet Senegal in Charlotte and Germany in Chicago in tuneups.
