Transport secretary says working on telecom issues fix after close call involving Marine One

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said he is working with the Federal Aviation Administration to address “telecom issues” that were flagged after a military helicopter carrying President Donald Trump came too close to a passenger jet departing Reagan Washington National Airport last week. Duffy said the concern has been “elevated” and involved timing questions about why commercial traffic was allowed to depart while Marine One was nearby, when flights are typically halted. He spoke Tuesday at Newark Liberty International Airport at an event for a new surface movement radar. The FAA is also investing billions after past telecom and radar failures, including outages affecting Newark and Washington traffic and a 2023 nationwide ground stop.
