Trump to announce $22.5 billion plan to overhaul Dulles International Airport

President Donald Trump and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy are expected to announce Wednesday a $22.5 billion overhaul plan for Washington Dulles International Airport, according to the White House. The project would add four new concourses, move the parking lot closer to the main terminal, and replace “people movers” that shuttle passengers—scrapping the mobile lounges that have operated since the 1960s. The renovations would also include an extended underground aerotrain to reach the concourses, plus moving sidewalks inside terminals. Funding would be split between the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority and the airlines. United, Dulles’ largest carrier, operates most flights from an outdated 1985 terminal later rehabbed in 2006. Dulles has faced criticism, including scrutiny after eight injuries when a people mover struck a dock in November. The airport’s main terminal would keep its historic appearance. Early concepts have suggested naming it the Donald J. Trump Terminal, though it’s unclear if that remains part of final plans. In December, the Department of Transportation sought public-private partnership proposals via an RIF that drew more than 30 submissions.
