Two yachts sink leaving man dead after storm strikes off Ayia Napa coast
xCruzo Brief
A severe summer storm off Cyprus’ Ayia Napa coast sank two yachts and killed a 77-year-old man. Emergency teams were alerted at 2:30pm on Saturday after reports that people were in danger on three boats near Cape Greko. Witness Panikos said he saw a man inside a larger yacht sending SOS as the vessel struck rocks in shallow water. Police and rescuers attempted rope assistance while thunderstorms, hail and strong winds battered the boats; JRCC reported two of the three vessels were completely destroyed after running aground. Helicopter rescues saved five more people, with two released after first aid and two still at Famagusta General Hospital. Fire service logged 357 calls across Cyprus.
