Veteran lifeguard, 71, dragged underwater off the coast of Maine by great white shark

A 71-year-old lifeguard and park manager, Greg Wilfert, was dragged underwater off the coast of Maine by a great white shark over the weekend, according to his account. Wilfert initially believed his rescue device might have caught on a boat after he was pulled down five to six feet, but quickly realized it wasn’t a boat. He said he swam back to the surface as fast as he could and focused on getting away. After reaching shore, he warned beachgoers, ordered them out of the water, and shut the beach for about an hour. He has since used jet skis and drones to monitor for other sharks and said great white activity has increased in the area.
