Weekly Southern Maryland Fishing Report: Fishing And Crabbing Great As Rockfish, Perch And Blue Crabs Bite
Weekly Southern Maryland fishing and crabbing report shows strong conditions for rockfish, perch, and blue crabs as warmer weather returns. The report says a heat wave has ended, and anglers across Southern Maryland are seeing very good catches, with white perch improving at Breton Bay off the Potomac River. Bottom fishing there produced perch using bloodworms, Fish Bites, lugworms, and peeler crab, while lure casters and anglers jigging reported success in the St. Mary’s River near Chancellors Point. Croaker in the 8-to-10-inch range are abundant in the Patuxent River near Hawk’s Nest, along with spot that is getting bigger. Rockfish have reappeared in creeks and rivers, though midday fishing slowed due to bright sun and heat. Striped bass and bluefish are mixed in the Potomac from St. George Island to Point Lookout, and blue crabs are at peak levels as cooler, reasonable winds persist. The report warns that the August striped bass closure approaches, with season closing until September.
