Weighs ban on Chinese data center equipment imports

The Trump administration is drafting a ban on U.S. imports of new Chinese data center equipment, according to four people familiar with the discussions. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which oversees telecommunications, is working on a measure that would bar imports of new Chinese optical transceivers used to move data through fiber-optic networks inside data centers. Officials aim to publish the proposal this year so it can take effect afterward. The goal is to reduce risks such as data theft, malware installation and service disruptions at facilities that run AI-training chips. Sources said the FCC could still modify or shelve the plan. The Chinese embassy warned against “smearing” firms and threatening sanctions.
