What comes next for grounded fishing boat on Point Reyes beach?

Salvage crews finally made progress on late Wednesday in efforts to pull the 58-foot Lake Bay out of the surf zone at Point Reyes National Seashore, in remote North Beach, Marin County. Five days after the trawler ran aground on a sand bar around 1 a.m. on Aug. 21, workers used an incoming tide and the pulling power of a second bulldozer to drag the vessel farther onto sand. Lt. Cmdr. Carey Lewis said the boat was still in the high-tide area. Removal of the squid in its hold would begin once it is far enough up the beach. The main challenge: 40 tons of squid, described as “congealed together.” Crews had tried four-inch pumps, then rented a six-inch one, without success. Lewis said Coast Guard concern centered on stability and a possible hull breach, and the risk of diesel discharge in an environmentally sensitive area within the Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary.
