What to know about opposition in Albania to a Trump family-linked resort project
A luxury resort project in Albania linked in reporting to Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner has faced mounting opposition from environmental advocates and triggered daily protests in Tirana. Demonstrations, including participation from across the country, have targeted Prime Minister Edi Rama and drew the label “flamingo revolution,” named for protected migratory birds that protesters say could have habitats threatened. The government argues the Adriatic-coast development would be transformational as Albania seeks entry into the high-end tourism market and pushes for European Union membership. Rama has vowed to continue the project, defending his administration’s environmental record and saying protests are fueled by overseas cyber activists, while accusing Iran amid a dispute tied to Albania sheltering members of an Iranian opposition group in 2022—an allegation Iran denies. EU officials said they are monitoring compliance with Albania’s EU bid terms. The venture includes plans around Narta Lagoon and an uninhabited island of Sazan, with investment linked to Kushner and the involvement of Ivanka Trump’s account of discovering the site while vacationing.
