Where is Louisiana's only cave? See the history, and what was found inside

Wolf Rock Cave, the only known cave in Louisiana, sits in Kisatchie National Forest near Leesville, within the Vernon Unit. The 30-million-year-old cave system lies close to the parking area on a scenic trail along Bundicks Creek. It was occupied as far back as 2,500 BCE by Archaic peoples, who left behind stone tools and ornaments such as axes, fish hooks and beads. Much later, local lore and accounts say the cave’s back rooms functioned as a Union hiding spot during the Civil War, and even that Jesse James used it. In the 1970s, the U.S. Forest Service sealed off two rooms after judging the system too unstable for public visits.
