World Cup 2026: Spain's Nico Williams criticises tackle that left him injured
Spain winger Nico Williams criticised Uruguay’s Nicolas de la Cruz for a “completely unnecessary” tackle that left him injured during Spain’s 1-0 win that sent Uruguay home and ended their World Cup run. Williams, 23, said he will likely miss at least Spain’s Round of 32 match. He sustained a muscle injury after the challenge and described the day as among the worst of his life. De la Cruz received a booking for the tackle in added time, while teammate Agustin Canobbio was shown a straight red card for diving on Pau Cubarsí. Williams posted on social media that he has faced multiple injury setbacks during a difficult season with Athletic Club in Bilbao, making only brief substitute appearances in Spain’s three group games. The Spanish Football Federation said Williams has a “moderate” injury and may still return later in the tournament.
