GE Aerospace said it carried out the world’s first high-altitude flight assisted by hybrid-electric propulsion, part of a technology showcase at the Farnborough Airshow. The flight took place above 30,000 feet using a Saab 340 that has been conducting similar trials since May, including a multi-stop Atlantic crossing that ended with a debut at the event. The research is being pursued with NASA and BETA Technologies, as engine makers work on components for potential next-generation aircraft engines for successors to the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320neo. GE’s Commercial Engines CEO Mohamed Ali said simulation has given way to real-world innovation. Hybridization, according to BETA CEO Kyle Clark, could help aircraft climb higher and faster when needed while targeting lower fuel burn and emissions. Rivals Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce are expected to update later this week.
